Untitled (Slab), 2018
For the Prize, Francesco Arena created a square slab in white bronze with phrases taken from The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck displayed on either side: “How can we live without our lives?” and “How will we know it's us without our past?”. Each letter is filled with fragments of grape stalks from the last harvest at CastelGiocondo.
Through the overlapping of literature and reality, Arena leads us to reflect on the relationship between language and matter, triggering a conceptual shift.
He was born in 1978 in Torre Santa Susanna (Brindisi) and lives and works in Cassano delle Murge (Bari). He has exhibited at Art Basel Unlimited (2017), at the Italian pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2013), at the Frac Champagne-Ardenne in Reims (2013) and at the Museion in Bolzano (2012).
